Work of Tomorrow

Increases in connectivity and automation have triggered a wave of technological innovations and have enabled a set of new business models. Amazon has revolutionized retailing, Uber is disrupting personal transportation, students from kindergarten to grad school learn new skills online, and algorithms are replacing investment managers at Wall Street. These new technologies replace “the old way of doing things” and often enhance the quality of products and services offered to us as consumers while simultaneously driving down costs.

Beyond the improvement in consumption experience, however, this trend comes along with major transformations in how companies operate, causing disruptions to established enterprises and threatening the work of millions of people. But, what will our work of tomorrow look like? Will our grandchildren still be taught by a human teacher? Will researchers looking for new drugs be replaced by artificial intelligence, just like truck drivers will become obsolete with autonomous vehicles? The purpose of this  podcast series is to explore how technology will change the way companies run their operations and how this will impact how we work in the future. To truly understand this revolution, we first have to understand the nuts and bolts of today’s operations. What drives costs? What can still be improved?

Each episode will feature a particular industry. The first guest will help us understand the current way of doing things, the operations of the incumbent: What are the cost-quality trade-offs for a retailer, a cab company, a university, or a retail bank? And, what are the top companies in these industries doing to innovate? The guest in the second half of the show then will champion a new technology or business model that has the potential to transform the industry. By comparing the operations of the incumbent firms with the business model of the new firm, we can assess if and how quickly the new technology will succeed and how this will impact firms, consumers, and workers alike.
